An Outreach to the Mobile Home Community

Every month during the summer, U.S. Representative Lou Correa partners with Catholic Charities of Orange County (CCOC) to engage with their local community. Representative Correa's team organizes various outreach activities at a mobile home complex, extending invitations for us to offer our services and resources. During one of these occasions, a lady approached our booth seeking information about CalFresh benefits, expressing concerns about her elderly mother's difficulty affording food.

In an effort to maintain confidentiality, I took her phone number and contacted her. The next day, I spoke with the daughter initially, then with her mother. The mother explained to me that she was on a fixed income and could barely make ends meet. She also needed to follow a special diet due to her medical issues and was desperate for the relief available through CalFresh Food benefits, but lacked guidance on where to start. I promptly conducted a screening for the mother and assisted her in completing the application over the phone that day.

After we finished, the mother was informed that her case qualified as urgent, and she should receive expedited service. The next day, the daughter called and informed me that her mother had been approved for CalFresh Food benefits. She was extremely thankful for the assistance and appreciative of the services CCOC provided to the community. Thanks to CalFresh Food benefits, this elderly woman afflicted with medical issues is now able to purchase the specialized food that she desperately needs.
