Bridging the Information Gap: Building Confidence in CalFresh Programs

Catholic Charities Yolo-Solano (CCYS) provides CalFresh Outreach (CFO) services to help individuals and families access food assistance and improve food security throughout Solano and Yolo counties. Through community outreach and education, our program works to reduce barriers that prevent eligible individuals from applying for CalFresh benefits.

Recent legislative changes, new work requirements, and public uncertainty surrounding benefit programs have increased hesitation among community members when considering whether to apply for CalFresh. In addition, disruptions and confusion surrounding government benefit programs during last year’s holiday season contributed to growing concerns and misinformation within the communities we serve. Many individuals are unsure about eligibility requirements and fear that applying for benefits could negatively impact their financial situation or immigration status.

During recent outreach efforts at migrant camps in Solano and Yolo counties, CCYS staff connected directly with residents to share information about available services and resources. Through these conversations, our team learned that many residents were more hesitant to apply for CalFresh benefits this year compared to previous years. After speaking with community members, we discovered that much of this hesitation stemmed from misinformation about the program.

Some residents believed they would not qualify due to factors such as credit scores, assets, immigration concerns, or fears that they would eventually have to repay benefits received. These misunderstandings created significant barriers and discouraged eligible individuals from seeking assistance.

Although outreach time with residents was limited, our team provided education, answered questions, and clarified common misconceptions about the CalFresh program. We also committed to returning to the sites to provide more in-depth consultations and on-site application assistance so residents could feel more informed and confident about applying for benefits.

Our role as outreach assisters extends beyond helping individuals complete applications. It also includes reducing stigma, building trust, and ensuring communities receive accurate information about available resources. By engaging directly with residents and addressing concerns through education and outreach, CCYS helps empower individuals to make informed decisions about accessing food assistance.

With CalFresh Awareness Month approaching, CCYS plans to continue strengthening outreach efforts in underserved communities by providing culturally responsive education, increasing awareness of available services, and supporting residents through the application process. These efforts help improve confidence in CalFresh programs and connect more families to critical food resources and long-term food security.
