St. Louise Resource Services addresses the high food insecurity and limited access to CalFresh benefits among the homeless and low-income community around Casa Milagrosa. Many are unaware of eligibility, miss deadlines like SAR 7 renewals, and lack basic resources like a phone or mailing address, complicating the application and follow-up process. Our target population includes homeless individuals and low-income families in Los Angeles, where homelessness and food insecurity are among the highest in the country. Despite over 500,000 residents receiving CalFresh benefits, many still struggle with hunger, highlighting the need for programs that assist with applications and renewals.
StLRS partners with Casa Milagrosa to assist with CalFresh applications and renewals. We advocate for clients, guide them through the process, and ensure they understand their eligibility. Casa Milagrosa provides clients with an address and phone for official communications, while we handle interviews and follow-up calls to DPSS. We also raise awareness about maintaining benefits and the steps involved. Many clients lack contact information, miss SAR 7 deadlines, or misunderstand the renewal process. By collaborating with Casa Milagrosa, clients can use their address and phone, helping them complete applications and reapply as needed. Our follow-up and empowerment-focused approach builds trust, encouraging clients to maintain benefits. This partnership has improved CalFresh access for the homeless and low-income community at Casa Milagrosa, with clients expressing gratitude for the support, which helps them fight hunger and navigate the county system. Our collaboration allows us to expedite services and secure benefits for those facing significant hardships.
The work is successful due to the comprehensive support we offer. StLRS’ commitment to availability, empathy, and advocacy empowers clients to seek the benefits they’re eligible for. By addressing barriers like the lack of a phone or mailing address and providing consistent guidance, we build trust and ensure clients receive needed assistance. The collaboration between StLRS and Casa Milagrosa creates a reliable community support network. We've helped many clients complete applications and follow-ups, leading to increased approvals and reinstatement of lost benefits. Our outreach educates the community on maintaining benefits, preventing future service loss. Moving forward, we aim to expand outreach, strengthen collaboration with Casa Milagrosa, and continue addressing barriers to help clients navigate the process confidently.
