CalFresh Outreach Brings Hope to Camp Fire Survivors

Even years after the devastating Camp Fire, survivors in Paradise continue to rebuild their lives. For many, the journey is long, difficult, and filled with financial strain. NVCSS is proud to stand beside these survivors, partnering with Katie Otterlei from the Camp Fire Disaster Case Management Program (DCMP) to ensure they have access to critical resources, including CalFresh benefits.

In August 2025, our CalFresh Outreach team — Shauna Aragon and Dan Dogert — met twice with a Camp Fire survivor at the site where his home once stood. They guided him step by step through the CalFresh application process, answering his questions and providing ongoing support. With a smile, he told the team, “You people don’t suck!” and added, “I am as happy as a hog!”

He later shared, “You guys are great. You have been so patient, informative, and helpful. I really appreciate all you have done.” For Christopher, CalFresh assistance isn’t just about food — it’s about dignity, relief, and the reassurance that his community hasn’t forgotten him.

By combining the long-term recovery expertise of DCMP with the practical support of CalFresh Outreach, NVCSS helps survivors meet immediate needs while continuing their courageous recovery journey. At NVCSS, we believe recovery does not end when the headlines fade. Through partnerships and programs like CalFresh, we continue to walk alongside disaster survivors — one meal, one step, one day at a time.
