From Hardship to Hope: Supporting Families in Crisis

Hardship can often arrive suddenly and without warning, leaving families struggling to survive and unsure where to turn. The loss of a job, a loved one, or a stable source of income frequently threatens a family’s ability to meet even their most basic needs. During moments like these, Catholic Charities Yolo Solano (CCYS) served as more than an organization. It becomes a source of hope. Through guidance and compassion, the CalFresh Outreach team helps families regain stability and confidence during some of the most difficult times in their lives.

One woman came to CCYS after losing her job unexpectedly. With no steady income and a child depending on her, she felt overwhelmed and out of options. Each day brought anxiety about how she would put food on the table or afford healthcare for her family. When she walked through our doors, staff met her with understanding and compassion. They listened to her story and quickly connected her to support. She accessed food through our pantry while staff assisted her with applying for benefits. Just three days later, she successfully enrolled in both Medi-Cal and CalFresh. What once felt impossible began to change. With access to healthcare and food assistance, she could focus on caring for her child and rebuilding her future with renewed hope and dignity.

Another woman came to Catholic Charities carrying a different kind of pain. After the loss of her husband, the primary provider for their household, she relied solely on survivor benefits that did not fully cover her living expenses, especially food. Grieving and under financial strain, she worried about how she would continue to make ends meet. At CCYS, she found support during one of the darkest moments of her life. Staff helped her apply for and receive CalFresh benefits, easing the burden of food insecurity. With this assistance, she no longer worried about where her next meal would come from and could focus on healing and moving forward.
